Headstones symbols

Often when designing headstones it is common to often include a symbol. Below are listed some of the more common symbols and there meanings:

Angels 

Angels are probably one of the more popular symbols as they are the agents of God and symbolise spirituality. Michael, who bears a sword and Gabriel, who is depicted with a horn are the two most common. 

Books 

Books are a sign that the headstone, grave or tombstone is a document with information on the deceased. When left open it can symbolise the headstone is like a biography, and when closed it can mean the story of the dead is over. 

Butterfly 

The butterfly is a symbol of the resurrection of Christ, from the three stages of its life, life, death and resurrection. 

Candles 

Candles which mean the spirit or the soul. Within the Christian contexts, candles can symbolise Jesus Christ, the Light of the World. Catholics often leave candles on the grave to show that prayers have been said for the deceased. 

Cross 

The cross symbolised faith, hope and charity and is the main symbol of Christianity. 

Doves 

The dove represent peace and also the holy spirit, and is a common symbol used on headstones.

The Heart 

Hearts stand for the affection of the living for the dead. Two joined hearts on a stone mark a marriage.

The Scroll 

The scroll is a symbol of life and time. With both ends rolled up it indicates a life that is unfolding like a scroll of uncertain length and the past and future hidden. Often held by a hand representing life being recorded by angels.
