Increase in Online Memorial Obituaries in the UK

Over the past 5 years we have seen the Internet become an increasing important way of placing memorial obituary messages. The recent sad loss of rally driver Colin McRae saw over 60,000 messages of condolence placed online allowing many people to share their thoughts, memories and extend messages of condolence.

Such activity shows how the Internet has become established as a trusted medium for sharing our daily lives, possibly linked to the growth of social networking sites such as my space and face book. Many people now consider the Internet as a real alternative to placing a traditional announcement in regional press. Online obituaries offer a greener alternative to the use of newspapers and improved long term accessibility.

There is now a number of websites in the UK which enable people to place messages of condolence online and create a platform from which to do so.

Some websites offer a free service from which to post messages and share a small number of cherished photographs, while others for a small fee give the ability to build a simple website.

Such services are often of special interest to friends and family living abroad who are unable to attend funeral ceremonies.
