Assuming there is space in the parish churchyard everyone has the right to be buried in the parish in which they die. Grave spaces can be paid for in advance to reserve the space in the churchyard, upon death a faculty document will need to be produced.
If a family grave is being used then there will be fees for opening it up, moving the headstone and adding inscriptions to the existing grave.
There are normally fees for digging the grave, your funeral director will be able to help identify such costs. If an exclusive right of burial is required (no further burials can take place with obtaining your consent first) then an extra charge may be made. In many churchyards you will need to purchase the exclusive right if you wish to erect a memorial or headstone.
In additional to burial in the churchyard there are alternative options such as; burial in a vault, burial at sea and woodland burials.
In a traditional burial there are fewer restrictions than in a cremation in terms of possessions, clothing and decoration of the coffin.
