Headstone, memorial and gravestone inscriptions generally includes the name of the deceased and their date of birth and date of death. The inscription is usually divided into three main areas or sections;
1. The heading – usually at the top of the headstone, examples being; In Loving Memory, Treasured Memories, Special Memories…
2. Main body – This usually consist of the name, data of birth and death and any other wording which is appropriate.
3. Footnote verse – This usually is at the bottom of the headstone. Click here for examples of verses.
The style of the writing can usually be from a selection from various fonts (styles of writing) and finishes.
Font types.
There are four main types which are suitable for use on headstones and memorials these being; Roman, Block, Old English and Script, but others are available.
Finishes.
Most inscriptions are created using a computer to design the inscription, a rubber stencil which is laid over the headstone which is then sand blasted. The wording can then be finished using paint, lead or gild.
