Health and Safety Checks of Memorials and Headstones

Councils have been asked to carry out safety checks of headstones within all cemeteries. This work was ordered by the Health and Safety Executive. These checks will be completed by trained officers who made sure the work was carried out with due respect. Every headstone will have to be carefully examined and marked to identify any that could present a danger to cemetery visitors. Headstones which could cause serious injury will be carefully laid flat.

Future regular checks will be essential to protect visitor safety.

Who Responsibilities are headstones
All headstones are owned by and are the responsibility of the Grave Owner or their next of Kin. However, Councils have the obligation of making a memorial safe if it is found to be in an unsafe condition. This may entail laying the headstone down. No headstones will be removed from the grave space.
Memorial Masons Registration Scheme
It is essential that families do not attempt to move headstones which have been laid down. It is recommended that a registered stonemason undertakes this job.   Your local council should be able to recommend a suitable mason.
