Registering a death

We often receive questions via our website on formality's that are required after the death of a friend or loved one.

As a result we have complied these frequently asked questions to help you.

How long do I have to register a death?

In England and Wales you have 5 days to register a death, people normally register death whilst planning memorial arrangements.

What will I need?

You will need a copy of the death certificate issued by the medical practitioner. If there is to be an investigation by the coroner the issuing of the death certificate and registering the death will be delayed accordingly.

How do I get death certificate?

A copy of death certificate once issued can now be obtained online for convenience at http://www.gro.gov.uk

What if the death was abroad?

In this circumstance the death certificate will normally be issue in the country where death occurred and then is registered in the normal way back in the UK.

How do I find my local register office?

Check out the home office website that has a useful postcode search tool to show your nearest local register office.

Can details be amended once death has been registered?

Yes, if any details are incorrect they can be amended at a later stage by the registering office.

Do I need to notify anyone if the body is moved outside of England and Wales?

If the body is to be moved outside England and Wales you will need to advise the local coroner.

You will need to complete a form provided by the coroner or registrar and provide the certificate for burial and cremation, if issued. Once this has been received the coroner will authorise the body to be moved outside England & Wales. This process normally takes at least 4 working days.
